What is a Wadfest?

This is a question that is asked by a lot of people who have never been to a Wadfest Event before.

Basically to answer that question you will need to know why it was started.

It was started as a cheaper alternative to the Discworld Convention, so that families can have a weekend to meet up with people with a common interest, over the years this has always been the main aim, to give fans a cheap family weekend.

Since its small beginnings it has grown to be the biggest annual Discworld Event, what makes it so successful, is that it is run by fans for fans, so what happens over the weekend in the way of games etc. is because the fans want it to happen, we are not a commercial event so we have no ties with any company demanding how we run the event.

What can I expect if I decide to go to Wadfest?

The first thing you can expect is a friendly atmosphere which will make you feel as though you belong straight away, one of the things I have always tried to avoid is a situation where you get little cliques of people doing their own thing, this is not to say that you will be forced to take part in everything, we also try to leave time between events to give you time to meet up with old friends, or to make new ones.

One of the things that some people do not realise if they have never been to a Discworld Event before is that several of the characters from the Discworld books are based on real people, and at Wadfest you could find yourself talking to one of these characters. Some of the characters you could end up talking to are:

The Hodge (Hogesargg, Lords and Ladies, Carpé Jugulem)
Alex. (Sane Alex, Going Postal)
Sandra Battie (The real Seamstress, Nightwatch)
Waddy (Waddy, Nightwatch)
Big JL (Dr lawn, Nightwatch)
Kev Clarke, (Not a character from the book as such, but the person the Paul Kidby based his drawings of Cohen the Barbarian on)

Also you will get to meet several people who where extras in the making of the Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic film.

Plus my hero Jason Anthony DWMOOK editor of the Discworld Monthly.

And who knows you may get to meet the man himself Terry Pratchett.

As well as meeting people, we put on various events that whatever age you are, you will find something to enjoy.

Do I need to be a Discworld fan to enjoy Wadfest?

No you don't have to be a Discworld fan to enjoy Wadfest, several people who attend Wadfest have never read a Discworld book, you may miss out on some of the Discworld jokes that we say, but you will still have a great time.

Do I need my own camping equipment?

Whilst we do have some spare equipment, please do not rely on this as it is for emergency use only, if you want to camp then yes you will need to bring your own camping equipment.

I hope this has help you to decide to come to Wadfest .

Have a look at the previous years pictures to get an idea of what goes on.
